Light rail is safe, guarantees Macau government

The Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Raimundo do Rosário, defended on Thursday that the light rail “is safe” and that the four incidents recorded since the beginning of operation – on 10 December – were malfunctions, and they did not even have accident severity.

The light rail saw an interruption on the first day that the Taipa line was opened. The last incident was this month.

On Thursday in the Legislative Assembly to answer questions from deputies, the Secretary for Transport and Public Works referred to the new form of transportation “as a child, who still doesn’t know how to walk”, and who also suffered the effects of the pandemic , starting with the reduction in the number of passengers.

At the beginning of the operation, the ticket was free and, according to Raimundo do Rosário, this contributed to an average of more than 30 thousand people riding the subway per day. But then the COVID-19 pandemic passed, and travel dropped to less than 500 a day. In the meantime, they recovered up to 2,000 daily, he explained, in response to a question from Mr Ho Ion Sang.
