Favela with ‘homeless from quarantine’ grows in São Paulo

Artur Rodrigues e Lalo de Almeida

New unemployed people are evicted by the hundreds; drivers and couriers live in occupation.

Mother of five, caregiver Paula Evelin da Silva, 30, had to rush out of the house after repossession two years ago. Since then, she was able to pay the rent, but with the pandemic of the new coronavirus she was fired and ended up on the street again.

Having nowhere else to go, Paula lives today in a newly emerged favela in Jardim Julieta, in the Parque Novo Mundo region (north zone). The place, again, has a repossession order set.
