Two-time champion, Alonso is confirmed by Renault and returns to Formula 1 in 2021

The target of repeated rumors and speculation in recent months, Fernando Alonso will finally make his return to Formula 1. This Wednesday, the Spanish driver was confirmed by Renault to return to the category in 2021. The two-time champion will drive for the same team for which he won his two world titles in the category, in 2005 and 2006.

Alonso had been out of F1 for two years, when he ended his frustrated spell at McLaren at the end of 2018. At the time, he had left open the possibility of a return in the short or medium term. Since his “retirement”, his name has been the subject of speculation, especially in times of negotiation between the great teams and their pilots.

“Renault is my family, it is where I have my best memories in Formula 1, with the second championship. But now I want to look forward ”, said the Spaniard. “It is a great source of pride and immense emotion to return to the team that gave me the chance to start my career and now gives me the opportunity to return to the highest level.”

Alonso will return to F-1 with veteran status, and with more baggage. About to turn 39, on the 29th of this month, the Spaniard now has another title in the traditional 24 Hours of Le Mans and a World Endurance (WEC) trophy. Without so much success, he got a 13th place in the Dakar Rally last year. And he failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 in Formula Indy.
