TikTok. The application caught in the middle of the war between Trump and China

It is increasingly popular with the youngest, but for the US and Indian governments it aims to spy on users.

The administrator of the social network Reddit, the hacking group Anonymous, the Indian government and the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have in common a deep distrust of the TikTok application.

The Trump administration could follow in the footsteps of the Indian executive and ban Chinese mobile applications like TikTok. Thus, Pompeo said in an interview with Fox News that they are taking the topic “very seriously” and “really considering” banning this application.

Pompeo said the United States has been working on the “problems” of Chinese technology. With regard to TikTok, at the end of 2019 the armed forces prohibited the military from using the application. “It is seen as a cyber threat,” Army spokesman Robin Ochoa told Military.com.

If the alarms sounded earlier in the specialized technology publications, the geopolitical warning came in January 2019. “Ignoring the scope of these applications could prove to be a fatal error. The ubiquity of social platforms and the depth of information the users collect make them very powerful tools both for spying and for manipulating public opinion. TikTok per se may never expand its reach beyond teenagers, but it is only a matter of time before a more appealing Chinese application reaches the US and EU markets ”, concludes a text by Claudia Biancotti published by the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
