Street violence marks debut of new Chinese security law in Hong Kong

At least 320 people were arrested in conflicts that lasted all day in the territory

Hong Kong became the scene of a pitched battle between pro-democracy activists and police on the first day of the new national security law imposed by Beijing on semi-autonomous territory.

As in the most violent days of last year’s protests, which drove the Honguese economy off its feet and threw the region into political chaos, there were barricades with fire, rubber bullets, pepper spray, water cannons, thrown bricks, store vandalism and lightly wounded from side to side.
