Portugal selected for European Union Prize

Portugal is one of 14 countries selected for 2021 edition of European Union Prize for Literature, created in 2009 by the European Commission, which in previous editions distinguished Dulce Maria Cardoso, Afonso Cruz and David Machado. The award is target for young emerging European writers, with the aim of enhancing European literature. It’s funded by Creative Europe Program.

This year’s winners were announced on Tuesday, with Matthias Nawrat from Germany, Nathalie Skowronek from Belgium, Lana Bastašić from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maša Kolanović from Croatia, Stavros Christodoulou from Cyprus, Asta Olivia Nordentoft from Denmark, Irene Sola from Spain, Made Luiga from Estonia, Shpëtim Selmani from Kosovo, Francis Kirps from Luxembourg, Stefan Bošković from Montenegro, Petar Andonovski from North Macedonia and Maria Navarro Skarange from Norway.

The European Union Prize for Literature was created in 2009 by the European Commission and is funded by the Creative Europe Program.

The award is aimed for young emerging European writers, with the objective of valuing European literature and disseminating it worldwide, as well as promoting the circulation of works and authors.

The contest is open to 41 countries currently funded by the Creative Europe program and organized in three-year cycles. Each year the organization selects a set of countries corresponding to one third of the total participants. At the end of each three-year cycle, all countries and language areas were represented.

The first three-year cycle was completed in 2009-2011, the second cycle in 2012-2014, the third cycle in 2015-2017, and the fourth began in 2019 and ends in 2021.

In 2009, the Portuguese writer Dulce Maria Cardoso was one of the winners with the work “”Os meus sentimentos””. In 2012, Afonso Cruz won the prize with “A boneca de Kokoschka”, and three years later, in 2015, it was David Machado’s turn, with the work “Índice médio de felicidade”.
