China: “Next phase of US-Iran peace deal will be more complicated”

"The current consensus is far from the finish line. Instead, it is a brand-new starting point. Achieving a lasting peace in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf requires substantial, concrete efforts from all sides," Wang Yi clarified in a statement issued by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that the upcoming phase of negotiations between the United States and Iran to secure a permanent regional peace treaty will be considerably “more complicated.” The statement follows a landmark memorandum of understanding reached between Washington and Tehran, which is scheduled for an official signing ceremony this Friday in Switzerland.

During a diplomatic telephone call with his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar, Wang indicated that further difficulties can be anticipated post-signature. He argued that the United Nations Security Council must assume a more prominent role in sustaining these sensitive talks to ensure they do not collapse.

“The current consensus is far from the finish line. Instead, it is a brand-new starting point. Achieving a lasting peace in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf requires substantial, concrete efforts from all sides,” Wang Yi clarified in a statement issued by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese diplomatic chief emphasized that Beijing remains entirely committed to working alongside Islamabad to systematically push for de-escalation, underscoring that negotiations must not regress or devolve back into the use of military force. During their exchange, Wang and Dar leveraged the momentum of the US-Iran ceasefire to highlight the success of their joint five-point peace plan initially unveiled in Beijing.

The strategic Sino-Pakistani framework explicitly called for immediate high-level dialogue to contain regional escalation and demanded the unhindered restoration of international maritime navigation through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Minister Dar highly praised Beijing’s structural support of Islamabad’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, which included recent state visits by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to cement the mediation strategy.

Islamabad has served as the core intermediary for swapping peace proposals between Washington and Tehran, successfully yielding a memorandum that halts three months and 16 days of conflict. Sharif will personally preside over the official signing ceremony in Switzerland on Friday. Beyond Middle Eastern affairs, the two foreign ministers reviewed the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC 2.0) to continuously boost bilateral economic investment.
