China advocates strengthening the UN to prevent the “law of the jungle” from prevailing

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for strengthening the United Nations (UN) and multilateralism amid growing global instability, to prevent the “law of the jungle” from prevailing

Lusa - China

Wang expressed this position during a meeting in Beijing with UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, according to a statement released by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Faced with an international landscape marked by growing tensions and the adoption of force-based approaches by some countries, “it is necessary to stay on the right path of unity and cooperation and not allow the law of the jungle to prevail,” Wang said, as quoted in the statement.

The diplomat noted that the organization and multilateralism face “serious challenges” and warned against hegemony, intimidation, and the imposition of the will of the strongest, advocating instead for a system based on equity and justice.

Wang described the UN General Assembly as the main platform for the practice of multilateralism and assured that China will continue to defend this international system, promoting common development and strengthening global governance.

Baerbock thanked China for its support of the United Nations and highlighted its “pivotal role” as a founding and permanent member of the Security Council in upholding international law, according to the same statement.

“In the face of growing pressure on multilateralism and direct attacks on the UN Charter, countries must unite more than ever to support the organization,” she said.

Since the start of the conflict in the Middle East, Beijing has called for a negotiated solution, supporting initiatives that help reduce tensions, and arguing that the Security Council should play a role in de-escalation rather than “condoning illegal acts of war.”

China has repeatedly condemned the attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran, while emphasizing the need to respect the sovereignty of the Gulf countries, with which it maintains close political, commercial, and energy ties.
