Macau has achieved a historic milestone in higher education, securing a spot in the top 30 of the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings for the first time. The University of Macau spearheaded this achievement, climbing six positions to reach the 28th spot in the 2026 edition of the list.

The territory’s academic presence continues to grow, with two other local institutions also appearing in the rankings: the Macau University of Science and Technology, which tied for 52nd place, and the City University of Macau, which made its debut in the 201–250 bracket.

The THE Asia University Rankings are recognized as one of the most comprehensive evaluations of the region’s academic landscape, assessing institutions based on critical metrics including research excellence, citations, patents, internationalization, and the overall teaching environment. This year’s edition featured a record 929 universities across 36 countries and territories, a significant increase from the 853 institutions ranked in 2025.

China maintained its dominance in the rankings, with Tsinghua University securing the first-place position for the eighth consecutive year, followed closely by Peking University. In total, five of the top ten positions are occupied by Chinese institutions, complemented by two universities from Singapore, two from Hong Kong, and one from Japan. Notably, the University of Tokyo rose to a joint fourth place, marking its strongest performance in a decade.

Phil Baty, the chief global affairs officer at THE, highlighted in a statement that the results underscore the extraordinary performance of China’s higher education and research sectors. Furthermore, the rankings reflect the rising influence of Southeast Asia, specifically Malaysia.

Malaysia reached the top 40 for the first time with Universiti Teknologi Petronas, which tied for 35th place, and the country successfully doubled its representation in the top 100 to six universities, including Sunway University, which jumped nearly 60 positions to rank 84th.

While China and other established academic hubs lead the upper tiers, the rankings illustrate the broader expansion of high-quality education across the continent. India currently holds the highest number of ranked institutions with 128, followed by Japan with 115 and Turkey with 109.

Additionally, the list continues to expand its geographic reach, with Yemen making its debut this year as Taiz University entered the 501–600 band.
