Road safety operations during the Easter period resulted in over 2,300 accidents across Portugal, causing 18 deaths and around 800 injuries. During the same period, 638 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to data released Sunday by the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Republican Guard (GNR).
According to the “Easter 2026” operation report, GNR recorded 773 accidents between midnight Thursday and 23:59 Sunday, resulting in 12 fatalities, 25 serious injuries, and 217 minor injuries. During the same period, the PSP reported 1,521 accidents, causing six deaths and 553 injuries, including 22 serious cases.
As part of traffic enforcement, the PSP checked 16,823 drivers and monitored 43,032 vehicles with radar. These efforts led to 608 arrests for traffic crimes, including 350 for drunk driving and 199 for driving without a valid license.

The PSP also issued 4,728 traffic fines, mainly for speeding, lack of mandatory vehicle inspection, and absence of insurance. Additional infractions included driving under the influence, using a mobile phone while driving, and not wearing a seatbelt.
During the same period, the PSP arrested 72 suspects for property crimes and 106 for drug trafficking, seizing over 12,000 individual doses of narcotics. Around 400 domestic violence incidents were also reported, resulting in 17 arrests.
Meanwhile, the GNR checked 27,574 drivers, detaining 288 for a blood alcohol level of 1.2 grams per liter or higher. They also arrested 95 people for driving without a license. In total, the GNR issued 4,520 traffic fines, primarily for speeding, lack of inspection, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
