Former French prime minister Lionel Jospin, who led the government between 1997 and 2002, has died today at the age of 88, his family told AFP.

Jospin served as head of government during the first term of conservative president Jacques Chirac, leading France’s Socialist Party from 1981 to 1988 — succeeding the historic François Mitterrand — and again between 1995 and 1997.
