Guinea-Bissau’s transitional government prime minister today delivered one tonne of essential medicines — donated by France — to the State Purchasing Centre (CECOME), as part of a 10-tonne consignment.

Ilídio Vieira Té, cited by local media, said the French government donations, delivered in three batches, were made possible “thanks to the influence of former president” Umaro Sissoco Embaló. He described the medicines as “an important reinforcement of means in the area of public health” and stressed that access to healthcare and medicines is a central priority of the government’s action, with the social sector holding a strategic place in public policy.

The medicines were procured through a €6 million budget support grant mobilised by the French Treasury and managed by the French Development Agency (AFD). The funds are also earmarked for the payment of salaries to teachers and medical staff in Guinea-Bissau.
