The municipality of São Miguel in Cape Verde inaugurated Vozinha and Tubarão Azul (Blue Shark) streets on Tuesday. The initiative honors the national team’s starting goalkeeper and island football as a whole, following a historic and surprising run of two consecutive draws at the 2026 World Cup.
Mayor Herménio Fernandes of Santiago Island, cited by the Inforpress news agency, noted that the Cape Verdean international has officially become “a benchmark” for the archipelago’s sports, contributing significantly to the international projection of Cape Verde.
Vozinha gained widespread popularity after his spectacular performance in the 0-0 draw against powerhouse Spain on June 15, during which he made a string of crucial saves to protect the Blue Sharks’ goal.

However, the tribute extends far beyond the goalkeeper, honoring all players, the technical staff, federation officials, and prominent figures linked to Cape Verdean football in recognition of their collective effort to secure qualification and compete in the World Cup, the mayor emphasized.
The plaque-unveiling ceremony took place in Ponta Verde and was integrated into the official program for the festivities of Saint John the Baptist, the locality’s patron saint, celebrated today.
Cape Verde will face Saudi Arabia this Friday after securing draws against Spain and Uruguay (2-2). The island nation is aiming to secure a spot in the round of 32 during its debut appearance at a FIFA World Cup final stage.
