Mozambique imported the equivalent of one million dollars per day in automobiles from January to September of last year — around 865 thousand euros.
The country’s vehicle fleet is growing rapidly. In just nine months of 2025, Mozambique imported cars worth one million dollars per day, totaling 259.5 million dollars (224.5 million euros), according to updated statistics from the Bank of Mozambique. This includes 89.7 million dollars (77.6 million euros) imported in the third quarter alone.
Mozambique has no domestic automobile production. Vehicle imports amounted to 369.3 million dollars (319.5 million euros) in 2022, 421 million dollars (364 million euros) in 2023, and 386.8 million dollars (334.6 million euros) in 2024.
The country’s car fleet grew by 4.2% in 2024, surpassing 1.3 million vehicles, mostly light vehicles, with almost half concentrated in Maputo city, according to official data.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Mozambique recorded 1.27 million vehicles in 2023 and a new record of 1.32 million in 2024, with 564,525 registered in the city of Maputo and 496,707 in the Maputo province (excluding the capital).
The fleet of light vehicles reached 897,273, growing 12% from 2021 to 2024 — nearly 100,000 more cars on the road. By 2024, Mozambique had 267,792 heavy vehicles, 16,158 tractors, and 100,695 motorcycles, according to INE data.
