The President of the Republic will preside over the last Council of Ministers meeting before leaving office on Thursday, with the agenda covering the Portuguese language and Lusophony, the PTRR, and the current geopolitical situation.
The information was shared with Lusa by a source from the office of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
The meeting will take place at the official residence of the head of government in São Bento, and is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
At the close of the meeting, there will be a farewell session between the President of the Republic and the full government — ministers and secretaries of state — followed by a private lunch between Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Luís Montenegro.
Marcelo will leave office next Monday, the date on which the new President of the Republic, António José Seguro, will be inaugurated before the Assembly of the Republic.
The President had already confirmed on Friday, in Brussels, that he would preside over a Council of Ministers meeting. At the time, he noted that it is a tradition for the President of the Republic to chair the final Council of Ministers meeting both when he himself leaves office and when the prime minister steps down, recalling that he presided over the last Council of Ministers of António Costa’s government in March 2024 before Costa’s departure.
In 2016, António Costa extended a similar invitation to Aníbal Cavaco Silva at the end of his presidential term, with that particular Council of Ministers dedicated exclusively to maritime affairs and held at the Forte de São Julião da Barra in Oeiras, in the district of Lisbon.
Under Article 133 of the Constitution, one of the President of the Republic’s powers is to “preside over the Council of Ministers when requested to do so by the Prime Minister.”
