Trump says Zelensky ‘isn’t ready’ to approve US peace plan

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed disappointment regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's hesitation to approve a proposed peace plan aimed at resolving the prolonged conflict with Russia.

After three days of negotiations, which concluded without reaching an agreement, Trump noted that Zelensky “isn’t ready” to endorse the proposal, suggesting that his reluctance could hinder progress in the talks, according to AP.

During a press exchange, Trump emphasized that while some members of Zelensky’s team found the proposal appealing, the Ukrainian leader had not yet made a decision. He remarked, “I’m a little bit disappointed that President Zelensky hasn’t yet read the proposal,” implying that further engagement from Zelensky was essential for moving forward.

In contrast, Russian officials have remained noncommittal, with President Vladimir Putin rejecting significant aspects of the proposal as unworkable, illustrating the complexities involved.

Despite the stalled discussions, Zelensky remained optimistic. He confirmed having a “substantive phone call” with U.S. officials involved in the negotiations and reiterated Ukraine’s determination to work diligently toward a peaceful resolution. Zelensky’s communications reflect a willingness to continue efforts in good faith, underscoring Ukraine’s commitment to resolving the conflict.

As diplomatic efforts evolve, the situation on the ground remains tense. Russia’s missile and drone attacks continue to inflict casualties in Ukraine, killing at least four people in recent strikes. These assaults are part of a broader strategy to undermine Ukraine’s infrastructure, particularly aimed at disrupting access to essential services like heat, light, and running water during the winter months, which Ukrainian officials describe as “weaponising” the cold.

In a move to strengthen diplomatic relations, leaders from the UK, France, and Germany are scheduled to meet with Zelensky in London shortly. This ongoing engagement among Western allies highlights a concerted effort to navigate the crisis and support Ukraine amid the worsening conflict, as discussions around the peace proposal continue.
