9 killed in multiple crashes on Xinjiang expressway

A series of collisions triggered by dense fog and icy road conditions on a major expressway in China’s Xinjiang region left 9 people dead and 7 injured on Friday night, according to local authorities.

At around 10 p.m. on December 6, two sections of the G30 Lianhuo Expressway (from Lianyungang, Jiangsu to Khorgos, Xinjiang), approximately 1 kilometer apart, within the Wusu City area of Xinjiang, experienced consecutive traffic accidents due to sudden severe weather, involving a total of 13 vehicles. The accidents led to 9 fatalities and 7 injuries.

It is understood that at the time of the accidents, sudden heavy fog appeared in certain local areas, and nighttime temperatures dropped below freezing, causing the road surface to quickly ice over. This led to vehicles skidding out of control, triggering the chain accidents.
