In 2023, the 51-year-old was found guilty of murdering three relatives and attempting to kill another by serving a toxic mushroom meal at her home in Victoria, BBC reported. Appeals in Australia are not automatic; Patterson’s legal team had to demonstrate potential legal errors during her trial.
The appeal was officially lodged after the Court of Appeal permitted her lawyers to proceed, although the specific grounds for the appeal have not been disclosed.
Throughout her 11-week trial, Patterson claimed her innocence, asserting that the incident was an unfortunate accident and that she did not intentionally use toxic mushrooms in the meal.
Her in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66, died after consuming the dish, while Heather’s husband survived but continues to suffer health complications. After seven days of deliberation, the jury unanimously found her guilty.
Patterson received one of the longest sentences for a female offender in Australia—life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for at least 33 years. A new procedural rule allowed her legal team an extension to file the appeal paperwork, which would have otherwise been due by October 6. Prosecutors have also appealed the sentencing, calling it “manifestly inadequate.”
