Takaichi joins a list of foreign leaders allied with the U.S. President who have requested the award for Trump, in recognition of his mediation in various international conflicts, including the recent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
Trump has expressed multiple times his desire to win this award in 2025, which ultimately went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
“The Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, announced the President’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize,” said White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt to reporters following the private meeting between Trump and Takaichi in Tokyo.
Earlier, during the opening remarks of the meeting—part of which was open to the press—the conservative Prime Minister praised Trump’s work in mediating the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as the “unprecedented historic achievement” in the Middle East.
“Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe spoke to me many times about his dynamic diplomacy,” Takaichi said, recalling the strong friendship Trump maintained with the Japanese leader, who was assassinated in 2022, during Trump’s first term.
Trump was in Malaysia on Sunday, where he witnessed the signing of a “historic agreement” between Thailand and Cambodia—who have a border conflict—during a ceremony with the leaders of both countries at the ASEAN summit.
