According to BBC, this operation, described as the largest against phone thefts in the UK, resulted in 18 arrests and the recovery of over 2,000 stolen devices.
Police believe the gang may be responsible for exporting nearly half of all phones stolen in London, where theft rates have surged. The investigation began when a victim tracked their stolen iPhone to a warehouse near Heathrow, leading to the discovery of numerous stolen devices.
Recent operations included dramatic arrests, where officers intercepted a car carrying dozens of phones wrapped in foil. Two Afghan nationals were charged with conspiring to receive stolen goods, and a third man has also been implicated.
The rise in phone thefts, which tripled in London from 2020 to 2024, is linked to the high demand for second-hand devices, particularly Apple products, which can fetch high prices abroad. The Metropolitan Police have emphasized their commitment to tackling this issue but face challenges due to budget cuts and resource limitations.
Victims have expressed frustration at the perceived lack of police action when reporting thefts, particularly when using tracking services. Despite these challenges, the Met reports a reduction in personal robbery and theft in London this year.
