Donald Trump stated on Monday, August 18, that his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky—who is in the US to be received at the White House—can end the war with Russia “almost immediately,” but Kiev will not recover Crimea or join NATO.
“Ukrainian President Zelensky can end the war with Russia almost immediately if he wants, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it all started. There is no chance of recovering the Crimea ceded by Obama (12 years ago, without a single shot being fired), and there is NO WAY UKRAINE WILL JOIN NATO,” the US president wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, told Donald Trump that he wants to end the war “quickly,” but with a “lasting peace.”
“We all have a deep desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting,” Zelensky wrote on the social network X, in a clear response to Donald Trump, hours before being received by his US counterpart in Washington, where he is already staying.
Zelensky is expected to be received by Trump at the White House, where he will arrive accompanied by European allies representing the “Coalition of the Willing,” namely the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, and Italy, as well as the Secretary-General of the Atlantic Alliance.
