Gov’t pushes for temporary campuses in Hengqin ahead of university town project

The Macau government is working with authorities in Hengqin to establish temporary campuses for two of the city’s public universities — the University of Macau (UM) and the Macau University of Tourism (UTM) — ahead of the completion of permanent facilities.

The initiative was confirmed by Macau Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chun during a press conference on Tuesday outlining the government’s revised 2025 budget.

The press conference revealed that the new UM campus in the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin is expected to cost RMB7 billion (MOP8.4 billion/US$970 million) for construction and development between 2025 and 2030. The government has allocated MOP1.75 billion towards the project in this year’s budget.
