CTM and MTel granted 1-year licence extension due to legislation delay

The licences for landline services of local telecom providers CTM and MTel will be extended for another year, according to a government gazette post published on Tuesday

This decision follows the government’s announcement in December last year that it would grant a nine-month extension to their two-year licences, which were originally due to expire at the end of 2023.

Under the new arrangements announced today, the licences of CTM and MTel will be further renewed from 1 October, 2024, to 30 September, 2025.

At the beginning of this year, Derby Lau Wai Meng, the director of the Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT), said that the authorities would strive for industry reforms within the nine-month extension period to ensure a fair market environment.
