Macau school discovers new asteroid

An astronomy team from Macau's Pui To Secondary School discovered, in April last year, a new asteroid close to Earth.

The discovery took place during an investigation at the Zijinshan Observatory in Nanjing and the recognition was made in November. The asteroid was given the provisional number (2023HZ9).

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng has already congratulated the team on this discovery and for opening a new chapter in astronomical exploration. Ho Iat Seng hopes that in the future the school will train more young people and scientists from the Macao SAR.

Pui To Secondary School principal Pauline Lei said that the next phase is to create a space science research and learning platform for secondary school students jointly with Macau University of Science and Technology and Nanjing Zijinshan Observatory.
