Kerry, who arrived in the Chinese capital on Sunday, was received by Wang at the Great Hall of the People, adjacent to Tiananmen Square.
The US envoy’s trip also coincides with a period in which several regions in the northern hemisphere, including China, are experiencing extreme temperatures, with heat levels hitting consecutive records.
“You are an old friend of ours,” the director of the Office of the Committee for External Relations of the Communist Party of China told Kerry, who has maintained a cordial and constant relationship with China, despite the bilateral relationship having hit an all-time low. , in recent years since the 1970s.
This is the third visit to China by the former US Secretary of State since taking office in 2021.
