Protesters block roads and keep transport affected in France

Dozens of blocked roads and access to fuel tanks closed by protesters, public transport “heavily disrupted” and public services occupied are marking, since Monday morning, in France, the protests against the approval of the change in the retirement age for 64 years, which should be consummated if the two motions of censure against the Government are rejected in the National Assembly.

The session is scheduled for 4 pm in Paris (15 pm in mainland Portugal) and will debate and vote on a motion presented by the centrist formation Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT, in the French acronym), supported by the left benches, and another by the far-right National Union party (Marinne Le Pen’s former National Front).

For any of the motions to pass, an absolute majority of 287 votes is required, which the proponents do not guarantee, given the strength of the parties that support French President Emmanuel Macron, Renascença (formerly A República em Marcha) and Modem, that secured the support of the Os Republicanos (LR) party. Some republicans should vote in favour, but it would be necessary for three dozen to break the commitment assumed by their leader, Eric Ciotti, who has already threatened to expel anyone who does so from the ranks of the LR.

Strikes, demonstrations and the blockade of infrastructures against changing the retirement age continue on the ground, aiming to pressure the vote in the lower house of Parliament, continue across the country, prolonging the protest actions of recent weeks and intensified since Friday.
