Situation around Bakhmut in Ukraine “is increasingly complicated”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that the situation for Ukrainian troops around Bakhmut, in the east of the country, “is increasingly complicated”.

“The situation is becoming more and more complicated,” said the Ukrainian President in his daily message.

“The enemy systematically destroys everything that can be used to protect our positions,” he added, calling the Ukrainian soldiers engaged in that battle “true heroes”.

Since the summer, Russian troops have been trying to conquer Bakhmut, due to its undisputed strategic importance, with the city becoming a symbol of the struggle for control of the Donbass region, in eastern Ukraine.

In comments broadcast today on Russian television, the Moscow-appointed head of the Donetsk region (Eastern Ukraine), Denis Pushilin, assured that all access roads to the city of Bakhmut are “within arm’s reach” of pro-Russian forces.

Russian forces have been trying for several weeks to encircle Bakhmut and have managed to cut off several major roads for supplying Ukrainian troops.

The head of the Russian paramilitary group Wagner, Yevgueni Prigozhin claimed on Saturday the capture by his men of the village of Iaguidne, located on the northern outskirts of Bakhmut.
