Acclaimed but with empty hands: Zelensky’s bittersweet journey

The Ukrainian president made a trip with stops in London, Paris and Brussels as the first anniversary of the Russian invasion approaches and Moscow forces once again have the initiative on the ground. The aim was to revive the public opinion of Western partners and their leaders for the need to add more weapons and more expeditiously to Kiev, on the one hand; and to press ahead with European integration, a week after the Ukraine-EU summit held in the Ukrainian capital. Volodymyr Zelensky was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor by the French president, received effusive hugs and compliments, ovations and praises, but immediately took home nothing concrete.

Riding from Paris to the Belgian capital on the French presidential plane, alongside Emmanuel Macron, the Ukrainian leader was received by the President of the Council and the President of the Commission at Brussels airport, “the heart of the European family, to which Ukraine belongs ”, as Ursula von der Leyen declared.

Later she said she was impressed with the speed of the Ukrainian reforms, but recalled that there is “a difficult path to go” in the face of a Zelensky who already sees his country in the EU this year.
