Former US President Donald Trump on Tuesday asked the Supreme Court to intervene in the legal dispute over confidential documents that were seized during a raid on his mansion in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
The Republican tycoon has filed urgent action asking the court to bar the Justice Department from examining about 100 classified documents seized from his home. The appeal does not question the legality of the operation carried out in August by the federal police in Mar-a-Lago, it only challenges the decision of an appeals court that authorized the Department of Justice to examine these documents without waiting for the conclusions of an independent expert, who should review them.
Trump, who does not rule out running for a new term in 2024, considers himself politically persecuted and claims that the seized documents are personal or declassified.
The former president also faces a civil trial in New York, accused of having manipulated his group’s assets to obtain more advantageous loans or to reduce taxes.
