Sheriff fired over school shooting failures

The Texas Tribune reported that the board of the Uvalde school district, near the Mexican border, voted unanimously in favor of the dismissal of Peter Arredondo, three months after the shooting.

The council accused Arredondo, then in charge of the operation, of having taken too long to order a police intervention.

The investigative committee’s report found that more than 370 local, state and federal agents responded to the shooting, but that it took more than an hour to confront and shoot down the 18-year-old gunman.

In a document released just hours before the meeting, Arredondo’s lawyers said the police would not be present in what they considered to be an “illegal and unconstitutional public lynching”.
