China extends military exercises off Taiwan for one day

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) announced on the social network Weibo – the Chinese equivalent of Twitter – that it continues “to carry out joint practical exercises in air and maritime space around the island of Taiwan”.

The maneuvers Beijing has carried out in recent days, which have included the use of live fire and the launch of long-range missiles, have been described by the Taiwanese government as “irresponsible”, as well as raising concern in the international community.

Monday’s exercises will focus on anti-submarine operations and air strikes targeting ships, the statement added.

However, the authorities did not specify the location of these additional maneuvers or whether they will keep the six areas where the last days’ exercises were held, one of them located just 20 kilometers from Kaohsiung, the main city in southern Taiwan.
