A magnitude 7.4 earthquake shook western Colombia on Monday morning, striking along the Pacific Ring of Fire near the town of San José del Palmar, roughly 250 miles west of Bogotá. Authorities have confirmed the death of 20 people.
Earthquake sirens sounded in the capital following the quake, according to reports. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time, about 3.1 miles east of San José del Palmar, at a depth of approximately 66.5 miles.

Residents in major cities across the country, including Bogotá, Medellín and Cali, reported feeling the shaking, according to the USGS. Some residents evacuated homes and buildings as the tremor hit. Colombia’s Maritime Authority said there is no tsunami threat associated with the earthquake.
