Human Rights High Commissioner denies China’s pressure on Xinjiang

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet yesterday denied receiving a letter from Chinese leaders asking her not to publish a report on alleged human rights violations by Uighurs in Xinjiang.

“There is no letter from the Chinese authorities, no. The truth is that there is a letter from several countries, just as there are letters from countries that ask me to publish it, there are letters from countries that ask me not to publish it. It’s a normal thing,” Bachelet said during a press conference in Lima.

The former president of Chile assured that her office continues to work to update the report on the Chinese region of Xinjiang, and that she will share, before leaving office, with the country in question, following usual practices.
