5G already reaches 64 percent of municipalities and 28 percent of parishes in Portugal

The rollout of the fifth generation (5G) mobile network is underway. At the end of the first quarter, there were already 2918 5G network stations spread across 198 counties (64 percent of the counties) and 859 parishes (28 percent of the parishes), the National Communications Authority (Anacom) revealed on Monday, in what is the first assessment of the development of 5G in Portugal.

At this point, NOS is the operator with the most 5G network stations installed. There were 1937 stations (or 66 percent of a total of 2918) at the end of March. It is followed by Vodafone with 534 stations (18 percent) and Meo with 447 stations (15 percent).

The regulator led by João Cadete de Matos indicates, however, that the information collected is still “not sufficient, by itself, to assess the fulfillment of obligations of coverage or network development imposed on operators who acquired spectrum in the auction. However, it identified “quite disparate situations regarding the characteristics of 5G access available in the municipalities of the country that already have stations.

Although NOS is ahead in 5G, Anacom reminds that the company led by Miguel Almeida “is the operator with the lowest number of stations [10,267 installed in the country]”, if 2G, 3G and 4G networks are also considered.

In the set of mobile and fixed networks available in the country, Vodafone has the most stations installed: 14,684, which corresponds to 38 percent of a total of 38,730 stations; followed by Altice, with 13,779 network stations, or 36 percent of the total number of existing antennas.

The regulator stresses that “many of the 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G stations” are located “in the same place.”
