Marcelo meets today with former Brazilian Presidents Fernando Henrique and Temer

Between the two meetings, the President of the Republic is expected to visit an exhibition by Portuguese artist Gabriela Albergaria at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Portuguese head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will meet today in Sao Paulo with former presidents of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Michel Temer.

Between the two meetings, the President of the Republic will visit an exhibition by Portuguese artist Gabriela Albergaria at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) of the University of São Paulo. Afterwards, he is scheduled to return to Portugal via Recife.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in Brazil on Saturday for a commemorative session of the centennial of the crossing of the South Atlantic, in Rio de Janeiro, and for the International Book Biennial of São Paulo, which has Portugal as the honored country.

The head of state had scheduled a meeting with his Brazilian counterpart for today, but ended up not flying to Brasilia, because Jair Bolsonaro told the media on Friday that he had decided to cancel the invitation.

Bolsonaro justified the decision with the fact that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will meet on Sunday with Lula da Silva in São Paulo. The Portuguese President repeatedly downplayed this episode, said he was waiting for an eventual written communication from his counterpart, and on Sunday finally gave up going to Brasilia. Bolsonaro will run for office again in the presidential race scheduled for October 2, where he will face Lula da Silva.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he will return to Brazil on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of independence, on September 7, and that “there naturally will be a meeting not only in Congress but certainly with the President of the Republic [Jair Bolsonaro] “.
