Hong Kong police create hotline for residents to report each other

More than a thousand complaints were made on the first day of operation

Hong Kong police have launched a hotline for residents of the territory to report anonymously to anyone they think has violated the new national security law.

Critics say the move has disturbing echoes of surveillance methods used in mainland China and will deepen divisions in the city, and may even be exploited by individuals trying to settle personal, commercial or political accounts for revenge.
