Kilimanjaro fire is under control

The fire, which started last Sunday in Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, was now controlled by firefighters, said Tanzania’s national park manager (Tanapa).

Cited by the agency EFE, this entity said that the fire destroyed about 95.5 square kilometers of vegetation, equivalent to 5% of the total mountain area.

This Friday, the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Hamisi Kigwangalla, also stated, in a publication on the social network Twitter, that “aerial inspections of Mount Kilimanjaro show that the fire is under control”.

On the same day, Tanapa’s spokesman, Pascal Shelutete, similarly assured that the fire was under control.

On Thursday, the Government of Tanzania asked for reinforcement, including helicopters and airplanes, to help put out a fire.

The fire started Sunday afternoon in the Whona area, a stop for those climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the main tourist attractions in Tanzania, and using the routes of Mandara and Horombo, said the minister, who added that the cause of this fire is unknown.
