The Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, said yesterday that he would like to start a new family of real banknotes – official currency of Brazil – with the face of personalities, such as the Portuguese Pedro Álvares Cabral or D. Pedro.
Bolsonaro’s preference for the Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral, who is credited with discovering Brazil, and D. Pedro, the first Emperor of Brazil, also known as King Pedro IV of Portugal, was declared in the transmission that the President conducts weekly on the social network Facebook, when commenting on the new note of 200 reais that the Central Bank launched this week.
“Some criticized the maned wolf [animal that appears in the new 200 reais bill]. This ballot takes a year to prepare, and it was already prepared. Of course, if we had more time, we would start a new banknote family, as in my boyhood. Personalities such as Pedro Álvares Cabral, D.Pedro and so many others who made history in Brazil ”, said Bolsonaro.
During the 25-minute Facebook broadcast, the head of state also addressed other issues, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, which has already made Brazil the second country in the world with the highest number of cases (more than four million) and deaths (almost 125 thousand).
