TikTok: Trump signs decree banning transactions with ByteDance

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed on Thursday an executive order banning all transactions with ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of the social network TikTok, within 45 days.

The Head of State spoke of a “national emergency” and accused the social network TikTok of spying on US users on behalf of Beijing, in a context of growing commercial and political tensions with China.

On Monday, Trump had accepted the possibility of an American group buying the TikTok, but before September 15, under penalty of banning the platform. Microsoft is in talks with ByteDance to negotiate a forced purchase. The ban also applies to the WeChat platform, which belongs to the giant Tencent.
