US pledges to protect exiled Hong Kong activists

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today pledged to protect Hong Kong’s pro-democracy activists who fled the city, criticizing China for having ordered the detention of some of them abroad.

Chinese state-owned media reported on Friday that Hong Kong police had ordered the arrest of six pro-democracy activists living in exile, accused of violating a draconian new national security law.

“The United States condemns the Chinese Communist Party’s attempt to prosecute pro-democracy activists who reside outside of China, including in the United States. We defend freedom, ”wrote Pompeo on his personal Twitter social account.
