“Against our will” – The winding road to equality

Inês de Sousa Real*

In 2015, I felt the need to create in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development a goal centered on Gender Equality.

The goals of this objective include, for example, ending all forms of discrimination and violence against all women and girls everywhere, or by eliminating all harmful practices, such as premature marriages, forced and practiced children, or as mutilations female genitals.

These practices, although they may not want to believe it, also occur in Portugal. In addition, domestic violence and sexual abuse occur predominantly in girls and women and its eradication appears to be far from being achieved.
