The UN General Assembly today chooses its president, as well as five non-permanent members of the Security Council and 18 members of the Economic Council, in an environment of criticism of inoperability.
The United Nations General Assembly will choose five of the 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council, as well as members of the Economic and Social Council and the next president of the Assembly, who will replace Nigerian Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.
In a moment of turbulence, with accusations of immobility, inefficiency and inability to respond to the global health crisis, the United Nations renewed some of its organs in the face of the distrust of observers and criticism from several of its members.
Representing four geographic groups, five new non-permanent members join the Security Council for a two-year term chosen by a body of 193 member states that will cast their ballot today, in an election that was postponed because of the pandemic of covid-19.
The candidates for each geographic group are: India, for the Asia Pacific group; Kenya and Djibouti, by the African group (where only one can be chosen); Canada, Ireland and Norway, by the Western European group and others (where only two can be chosen); Mexico, by the Latin American and Caribbean group.
These countries replace Belgium, Dominican Republic, South Africa, Germany and Indonesia, joining Niger, Tunisia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Vietnam and Estonia.
After the withdrawal of the candidacy from Afghanistan, India is assured of its victory, being the only candidate in its geographic group, as is the case with Mexico, in the Latin American group.
For the post of president of the General Assembly, which remains open with the departure of the Nigerian Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, Turkey presents the candidacy of Volkan Bozkir, a 70-year-old diplomat with a 39-year career.
Turkey presented its name in the hope of unanimous initial approval, but several countries have called for a vote, which will also take place on Wednesday.
