China has halted salmon imports from Europe because of the possibility that it may have been the cause of the coronavirus outbreak in a Beijing market, although experts have publicly stated that the fish itself is probably not a carrier of the disease.
Government-related newspapers reported that the virus was discovered on boards used for imported salmon at the Xinfadi market in Beijing, at the center of a set of infections that sparked fears of a second wave of the pandemic in China.
Recent events have prompted Beijing’s top supermarkets to remove salmon from their shelves.
At a press conference on Monday, Mike Ryan, head of the World Health Organization’s emergency program, said he expects China to publish the virus’s genetic sequencing when it is ready.
