Today is the day of the African child

The massacre of Shaperville, Soweto, South Africa, on 16 June 1976, is the origin of African Children’s Day. On that date, millions of black students demonstrated, demanding the right to better education and learning in their mother tongues and English instead of Afrikaans in schools

What was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration ended in tragedy. The police fired and killed several students. The images traveled the world and showed the true nature of the apartheid regime. It is important to stress that the students expressed themselves asking for something they are entitled to: better education.

The truth, however, is that, after 54 years, millions of African children are still victims of disease, violence and hunger, and school is a luxury for many, as corrupt rulers, a large number of them, trained abroad with money from their own countries, rides in high-end cars and leads a life incompatible with what he earns and produces.
