Teenagers become beggars to survive in Luanda

“It’s risk or die,” said one of the teenagers, 16 years old, seven months pregnant, to the newspaper OPAÍS, as she wandered the blocks of Kilamba’s centrality in search of food. Although a community kitchen has been set up at this center to serve the neediest, situations like this are still common.

The teenager, found wandering around Kilamba, told OPAÍS that she would rather “die” asking to steal, or not to try. If you do not ask, you will have nothing to feed your two younger sisters who accompany you daily on this journey. In response to your request, we chose to identify them by the fictitious names of Ângela, Joana and Bela.

The trio lives in a house made of zinc sheets, commonly known as plaque, built on land that their parents are “watching” to prevent evasion, in the “Cinco Fios” neighborhood, near Kilamba’s centrality.
