Widow of Chinese doctor who warned for the virus rejects tribute in Washington

Proposal to change the street name was presented by Republicans. Li Wenliang was the doctor who alerted colleagues to the then-unknown virus, and was later punished by the police.

The widow of Li Wenliang, the Chinese doctor who was punished for alerting colleagues to the covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan, criticized a proposal by American politicians to name her husband on a street outside the Chinese embassy in Washington.

Li, 34, was punished by the police for alerting his colleagues about the unknown respiratory disease, which would later kill him. Fu Xuejie wrote on social media that she didn’t want to see any sensationalism associated with her husband’s death. “I’m sad to hear about this news,” he said.

“Wenliang was a member of the Communist Party and he deeply loved his homeland. If he knew, he would not allow other people to use his name to hurt his homeland,” wrote the widow.
