Angolan flagship airline TAAG is planning redundancies in order to ensure the company”s survival, said the minister of Transport this week in Luanda, adding that the measure will be implemented as soon as the state of emergency in the country comes to an end.
“There is a surplus of staff that has to be dealt with,” said Ricardo de Abreu, who confirmed the recent decision of the Board of Directors of the Angolan air carrier to dispense retired workers with “continuity” contracts by up to 30%.
TAAG, S.A. was founded in September 2019 to replace TAAG Angola Airlines, E.P. by decree of the President of the Republic.
The minister also said he was examining, along with the Ministry of Finance, the amount of support the national airline will require, “both from the point of view of its financial reorganisation, and its capitalisation.”
The Transport Minister stressed that TAAG is a strategic company for the country and recalled the package of economic measures that the government had drawn up to support the business sector, be it public or private.
