Luís Represas has died at age 69 following a prolonged illness, confirmed the agency representing him. Between Trovante and his solo career, he leaves behind a repertoire that spanned multiple generations and marked Portuguese music.
The singer and songwriter Luís Represas died this Wednesday (22) at age 69 as a result of a prolonged illness, confirmed the agency representing him, Sons em Trânsito. With a career spanning five decades split between Trovante and his solo path, he leaves a legacy that marked several generations of Portuguese music.
The news was first reported by Notícias ao Minuto and confirmed by SIC Notícias with the talent agency A-MA Agenciamento de Espectáculos.
Luís Represas was one of the founders of Trovante in 1976, alongside João Gil and Manuel Faria. The group became one of the main touchstones of Portuguese music in the 1970s and 1980s, with tracks such as 125 Azul, Perdidamente, Balada das Sete Saias, Timor, Saudade, and Fizeram os Dias Assim.

The band ended its regular activity in 1990, the year it released its last studio album, Um Destes Dias. Over the following years, Trovante reunited for special occasions, including concerts held in Lisbon and Porto last year.
Following the end of the band, Luís Represas built a highly prominent solo career, authoring some of his biggest hits, including Feiticeira and Da Próxima Vez. In 2026 he marked 50 years in his career, celebrating the artistic journey begun with Trovante and consolidated as a singer and songwriter.
In March he participated in the band’s reunion concerts at the MEO Arena in Lisbon and at the Pavilhão Rosa Mota in Porto, with performances already scheduled for April 2027 at the Coliseums of Lisbon and Porto.
In 2005 he was honored by the Portuguese State with the Order of Merit, at the rank of Commander, in recognition of his contribution to Portuguese culture.

The musician’s death prompted reactions from public figures. In a message published on the social network X, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated that Luís Represas was “one of our greatest musical references” and considered his death “a loss for the country and for our culture.”
The head of government added that the artist’s legacy “will remain as contagious as in a full life of ‘thirst for the infinite… and saying it by singing to everyone,'” offering condolences to the musician’s family, friends, and fans.
