The French Parliament today granted final approval to a bill prohibiting social media access to minors under the age of 15, making France the first European Union member state to enforce such a restriction for adolescents in this age group.
The legislation, scheduled to take effect in September, passed with 279 votes in favor and 81 against, fulfilling a end-of-term campaign promise made by French President Emmanuel Macron.

While other European nations, including Portugal, are currently deliberating or have implemented similar restrictions, most have set their minimum age thresholds at 16.
Under the new regulatory framework, social media platforms will be required to integrate technical age-verification mechanisms. The passed legislation also mandates a comprehensive ban on mobile phones across lower secondary schools nationwide.
