The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has stepped up coordination with various public and private entities to prepare the tourism sector for the Labor Day holiday period in mainland China, from May 1 to 5. The goal is to ensure the smooth operation of the industry, protect visitors, and preserve Macau’s image as a high-quality tourist destination.
Authorities have stepped up enforcement efforts at various key locations, including border checkpoints, commercial areas, and major tourist attractions. In coordination with the Customs Services, the Consumer Council, and the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, controls in the retail sector have been intensified, as well as efforts to combat illegal practices associated with tourist excursions.
At the same time, joint operations were carried out with the Public Security Police Force to curb illegal lodging, one of the MGTO’s ongoing priorities. As of April 26, more than a hundred operations had been conducted, with dozens of suspicious units inspected and several sealed for irregular use.
Enforcement efforts also target the activities of illegal tour guides. MGTO has been closely monitoring tour groups and taking action against suspicious behavior, having already identified irregular cases and received complaints related to this practice.

As a preventive measure, the MGTO met with industry operators, including hotels, travel agencies, and restaurants, to strengthen preparations for welcoming visitors. The recommendations include improving hygiene and safety conditions, efficiently managing tourist itineraries, and spreading visitor flows outside peak hours.
The hotel sector was also advised on the need to adjust staffing levels, optimize service, and ensure balanced pricing through monitoring of digital platforms.
In addition, the MGTO maintains contact with tourism authorities in mainland China, sharing useful information for visitors and operators to facilitate travel to and stays in Macau.
During the holiday period, the Tourism Hotline will be available 24 hours a day, with increased staffing at information counters to ensure a rapid response to any incidents.
